Habit

Evergreen, herbaceous ornamental plant with large glossy leaves and bright spathes.

Habitat

Native to tropical rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador; cultivated worldwide as an ornamental plant, especially in humid and shaded conditions.

Morphology

Stem: Short, stout, often epiphytic or terrestrial.
Leaves: Large, glossy, heart-shaped or lanceolate, dark green, leathery.
Flowers: Inflorescence consists of a shiny, colored spathe (commonly red, pink, or white) and a yellow or cream spadix in the center.
Fruits: Small berries on the spadix.
Roots: Aerial roots that absorb moisture and nutrients from the air.
